The craziness of birthers, teabaggers, extreme right-wingers, etc is encouraging even more nuttiness and is a very visible sign of how the continuing decline of American education is really our biggest danger. We need to find a way to make college affordable, provide preschool and tutoring/mentoring; and to improve k-12 education for all, if we want to globally compete economically, and to maintain the democratic ideals that make our system of governance great. Unfortunately, many of our leaders, despite being well educated themselves, choose to cater to the crazies rather than rejecting the stupidity.
