Low-income Chicago students to get low-cost broadband
by Chuks Onyezia Esq. on June 1
On Tuesday, Mayor Rahm Emanuel joined Comcast in announcing, “Internet Essentials,” a first-in-the-nation program designed to provide high-speed Internet services for the families of Chicago Public School students who qualify for free school lunches . . . “This will ensure that every part of this city has a chance to grow in the new economy. And Chicago will lead the country in dealing with this economic and social divide issue,” Emanuel told a news conference at the Woodson Regional Library . . . Comcast Executive Vice-President David Cohen cited three primary causes for the digital divide: cost, fear of the Internet and a lack of understanding about the relevance of technology. The new program addresses all three.

I must say that I am pleasantly surprised that our new mayor has brokered such a deal that could provide that much needed competitive advantage to our CPS students. And it appears to cost nothing to us taxpayers!
