Put Illinois to Work: An Exciting Subsidized Jobs Program!

fyi

In the next few weeks, Governor Pat Quinn will announce an exciting subsidized jobs program, Put Illinois to Work, that will assist many of those hardest hit by the economic downturn. In anticipation of this announcement, I am writing in the hopes of signing you up as a Put Illinois to Work employer.

 A collaborative effort between the Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS), the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO), and Heartland Human Care Services (HHCS), Put Illinois to Work is an anti-poverty program intended to create subsidized employment opportunities for low-income families and individuals, with the ultimate goal of transitioning them into unsubsidized employment. As a valued provider, we would like to extend the opportunity for you to identify individuals that you serve as Put Illinois to Work participants, and to meet some of your own staffing needs by applying to be a Put Illinois to Work employer.

Participant benefits include:

*         Up to six months of income

*         The chance to learn and/or develop usable skills

*         Connections with employers

*         The opportunity to engage in meaningful employment

*         Securing valuable work experience

Employer benefits include:

*         100% wage subsidy for eligible participants

*         The chance to increase your agency's capacity

*         The option to hire a participant you can train, and
           subsequently hire in an unsubsidized position

*         The opportunity to expand your workforce

*         The ability to provide appropriate supervision and on the job
            training

We anticipate that many of the eligible participants will be some of the people you serve, and that your agency might be an eligible participating employer. Participants must be part of a household with income below 200% of the federal poverty level, and have a minor child.
Additional program requirements are outlined on the Put Illinois to Work website, www.PutIllinoistoWork.Illinois.gov
<http://www.putillinoistowork.illinois.gov/> . Once eligibility is determined, participants will be matched with an appropriate subsidized employment opportunity.

For more details on Put Illinois to Work, or if you are interested in being a provider, please visit the Put Illinois to Work website, www.PutIllinoistoWork.Illinois.gov.

Thank you, and I encourage you to take advantage of this tremendous opportunity for your agency and for the people you serve.

Sincerely,

Michelle R.B. Saddler, Secretary
Illinois Department of Human Services
