Peoria, Ill. - Gov. Pat Quinn says 577 employers have agreed to hire more than 3,800 workers through his recently launched "Put Illinois to Work" program.
Quinn made the announcement Saturday at the Peoria YWCA, which has agreed to participate in the program.
Quinn says the anti-poverty plan he unveiled last month is aimed at putting more than 15,000 people to work.
Eligible Illinois residents are placed in subsidized employment programs with participating work sites for up to six months. The funding expires on Sept. 30. All subsidized jobs have to end by that date.
Private, public and nonprofit businesses are encouraged to sign up.
Participants' income must be below 200 percent of the federal poverty level. That's $2,428 per month for a family of two.
These workers are helping employers combat the recession, while gaining experience and building a relationship with the employer that will lead to continued employment for some; and some experience and a job reference. I think this program is the type of policy innovation everyone can support. Taxpayers benefit from increased employment of underemployed and unemployed this program is helping. Employers benefit from the personnel assistance provided by the state. Maybe this will help stimulate the economy.
