Garry McCarthy: Chicago's New Top Cop the New Father Pfleger?

Does Chicago have another Michael Pfleger in the house?

Mayor Rahm Emanuel's top cop, Garry McCarthy, has been in office for only a minute, but he's already sounding like the tough-talking white pastor of St. Sabina Church on the city's predominately African-American South Side who made headlines back in 2008 by defending President Obama's former pastor, Jeremiah Wright.

While discussing gun control and inner-city deaths at the church earlier this month in statements that aired broadly last week, he said that federal gun laws are the equivalent of "government-sponsored racism," according to the Chicago Sun-Times.

"I want you to connect one more dot on that chain of African-American history in this country, and tell me if I'm crazy: Federal gun laws that facilitate the flow of illegal firearms into our urban centers, across this country, that are killing black and brown children," Superintendent McCarthy said, according to the Sun-Times. "Let's see if we can make a connection here. Slavery. Segregation. Black codes. Jim Crow. What, what did they all have in common? Government-sponsored racism."

Even though McCarthy had to do some strong backpedaling after a vociferous political backlash last week, he made his point, and history speaks for itself.

Let the church say amen.
