Carl Davis to be honored Wednesday, July 20 at Columbia College in the 2nd Ward To honor legendary music producer Carl H. Davis Sr., Ald. Bob Fioretti (2nd), Ward 2, introduced an honorary proclamation recently that was approved by Mayor Rahm Emanuel and the full City Council. Mr. Davis will receive the honorary resolution during the Carl Davis Day Celebration program at Columbia College, 600 S. Michigan Avenue, 8th Floor, Room 811, beginning at 10 a.m. tomorrow, Wednesday, July 20, 2011. The public is invited. It is a Carl Davis Day Celebration in Chicago, and the event will be attended by a variety of Chicago's top music and radio industry executives, artists, producers, musicians and the media. "Just like other Black music capitols; Detroit, Memphis, Philadelphia, Chicago has a rich soul heritage and an unmistakable soul sound," said Monica Hairston O'Connell, Ph.D., executive director of the Center for Black Music Research at Columbia College Chicago. "Carl Davis is one of the architects of that sound, and this recognition by the City of Chicago is an important step toward recognizing the fullness of Chicago's place in American music history." Mr. Davis started his career as one of the first African American A&R Directors and produced numerous hit songs for Columbia Records' subsidiary Okeh Records. His first multi-million selling song was "Duke of Earl." After the song was released on Vee Jay Records, it was amazing to hear people all over the country mimicking the rhythmic melody and lyrics. Mr. Davis' hits extend through Jackie Wilson's "Higher and Higher" and beyond. "This will be a historic day of celebration for Mr. Davis," stated Gus Redmond, Vice President, Chi-Sound Records. Master of the art of cutting a deal to the artistry of cutting wax, Davis' visionary leadership helped forge the legendary Chicago Sound. From the stage of Chicago's famed Regal Theatre to the bright lights of concert venues throughout the world, his artists were some of the brightest stars of our time. The Carl H. Davis Music Foundation is being formed at this time and will have a mission of promoting awareness and preserving the history of the Chicago Soul sound, and of continuing this heritage of musical excellence into the present and future. The Foundation will also benefit young musicians with grants as well as mentoring.
