A caravan of Chicago business executives is headed to Indianapolis and Bloomington, Ind., to mark the 100th anniversary of Indiana University's Kappa Alpha Psi fraternity July 2-10. Andre Rice Founded when Jim Crow laws were still on the books, the alpha fraternity became a lightning rod for equality at the mostly white school. It expanded nationwide, with the beta chapter starting in 1913 at the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. "There aren't many black organizations that are 100 years old outside of churches, says Andre Rice, president of Muller & Monroe Asset Management LLC in Chicago, and a Kappa who graduated from South Carolina State University (he earned an MBA from the University of Chicago). "You can only imagine the hostility the founders faced at that time." Among the thousands of Kappa alums joining Mr. Rice in Indiana this week are Lester McKeever Jr., managing principal of Washington Pittman & McKeever public accountants; Mitchell & Titus LLP's Jim Hill; sports agent and former Chicago Board of Education President Rufus Williams, business consultant Ralph Moore, and Chicago Bears great Gale Sayers.
