WASHINGTON -- For the second time in the past three years, Missouri topped the rankings on African-American homicides across the nation, beating its nearest competitor by eight percentage points, according to Yahoo News.

Washington, D.C. gun-control group Violence Policy Center (VPC) released its annual report Wednesday shedding some chilling light on the epidemic of murder raging through the black community, especially among young males.

The study -- which used the latest available FBI crime statistics from 2008 -- found that Missouri had 287 black homicides that year, for a victimization rate of 39.90 per 100,000 black residents. The other states rounding out the top 5 deadliest places for African-Americans were Pennsylvania, where 31 our of 100,000 black were murdered in 2008, followed by Indiana (28 per 100,000), Michigan (24.5 per 100,000) and Tennesse (22.59 per 100,000).

In 2008, blacks represented 13 percent of the nation’s population, but accounted for 48 percent of all homicide victims.

When looking at the numbers since 2002, the impact on the black community is staggering. From 2002 to 2007, the number of young black male homicide victims rose by 31 percent, VPC noted. The number of young black homicide victims killed by guns rose at even sharper 54 percent rate.

"The devastation homicide inflicts on black teens and adults is a national crisis, yet it is all too often ignored outside of affected communities," VPC stated.
